Abstract:
A highly sensitive, rapid reacting woody plant indicator for apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) was discovered when 201 Malus clones were screened for ASGV sensitivity.
A selection of M. micromalus (GMAL 273) displayed particularly distinctive foliage symptoms within 14 to 21 days.
This is in contrast to the 6 to 8 months frequently required for reliable ASGV react ions to appear on Virginia Crab indicators grown under the same conditions.
Two additional clones, individual selections of M. vunnanensis and M. tschonoskii also displayed particularly distinctive symptoms when inoculated with ASGV, but required 40 days for strong symptom development.
In total, clones from 18 of 38 known Malus species or hybrids displayed ASGV-associated symptoms at the graft union, on the foliage, or both.
