PLUM POX SITUATION IN EMILIA ROMAGNA

Authors:   V. Vicchi, P. Fini, L. Giunchedi, A.R. Babini, M. Cardoni
Abstract:
Emilia Romagna is the most important area in Northern Italy for stone-fruit production. In 1982, plum pox virus (PPV) was discovered in a six year-old apricot orchard, cultivar Precoce Cremonini. The following year the disease was detected in two plum orchards, cultivars Ruth Gerstetter and Bluefre, and in two nurseries. Between 1982 and 1993, surveys based on visual inspection and ELISA were carried out on plum, apricot and peach from nurseries, orchards and experimental fields to enforce an eradication program of PPV. The disease was detected in four commercial apricot and ten plum orchards with infection rates varying from 17 to 95%, in three plum nurseries with levels of less than 20% and in experimental fields set up with material from other regions or imported. All infected trees were eliminated. The disease was not detected in peach. Over the twelve year period natural spreading of PPV to nearby orchards was only observed once in a six year-old plum orchard.
