Abstract:
In 1988, the certification of fruit tree nursery plants from high quality mother plants was started in Spain following the regulations that the International Committee for the Cooperation of Research on Fruit Trees Virus Diseases periodically publishes for the testing of virus and virus-like diseases transmissible by grafting (Casallo, Barea, Sanz; XIVth International Symposium of Fruit Tree Virus Diseases, 1988).
Also, with the aim of knowing the health situation of standard material concerning virus, the Seeds and Nursery Plants Control Center of the Diputación General de Aragón started in the same year a programme for the analysis of 2256 mother plants in order to produce buds with varietal guarantee and known health conditions.
The studied viruses were: prune dwarf (PDV), prunus necrotic ring spot (PNRSV), apple mosaic (ApMV), plum pox (PPV) and apple chlorotic leaf spot (ACLSV), easily transmissible by air vectors, seeds, pollen or grafting.
The serological indexing by ELISA has been the most used test and the indicator Prunus serrulata cv.
Shirofugen confirmed or did not the presence of PDV or PNRSV in the uncertain cases.
The results obtained till 1993 included have been:
From 6 apricot cultivars, 3 showed the presence of ACLSV or PNRSV.
From 11 almond cultivars, all showed PDV and/or PNRSV.
From 25 cherry varieties, 10 were detected with PDV and/or PNRSV, one of them was affected by ApMV as well.
From 18 plum cultivars tested, 15 showed ACLSV and/or PNRSV.
From 48 peach cultivars studied, 39 showed ACLSV and/or PDV and/or PNRSV and 4 will be retested in 1994.
With this work, the production and commercialisation of certified virus tested (v.t.), "Conformitas Agraria Communitatis" (C.A.C.) fruit material as well as the labelling with the EEC Plant Phytosanitary Passport according to the Council Directive 92/34/EEC and the Commission Directive 92/105/EEC will be possible.
