Abstract:
A severe plum decline occurred in several orchards in central Italy.
Fifty samples were collected from five orchards of the following Japanese plum cultivars: Midnigth Sun, Howard Sun, Globe Sun, Angeleno, Black Gold, Black Diamond.
Biological, serological and electron microscopy assays showed the presence of MLOs and chlorotic leaf spot virus (CLSV) in a close association with the above mentioned symptoms.
We suggest these agents play an important role in the etiology of the plum severe die-back, since symptomatological features of Plum leptonecrosis (caused by MLO) and plum bark split (caused by CLSV) seem to correspond, each separately, to a part of the observed symptomatology.
