Abstract:
Coiled structures were detected by electron microscope examination of flowers and leaves ofPrunus avium, P. mume, and P. serrulata. The structures were bud transmissible and were detected in the spring of 1972, 1992, 1993, and 1994. Spring appears to be optimal for their detection.
The coiled structures were associated with a closterovirus-like particle.
Attempts are being made to transmit the particles to herbaceous hosts for further characterization.
