Abstract:
Flower bud lesions observed in 'Stark Early Orange', 'San Castrese' and 'Cafona', in Italy and in Portugal were similar to those previously described in the Portuguese varieties.
They appeared associated with plasmodial organisms that seem to live in the bracts and to pass to the flower organs, digesting extensive areas of the receptacle, peduncle and axis leading to flower bud abscission or to damage in stamens and pistils.
The same kind of lesions were observed throughout the study period.
Climatic factors and /or metabolic changes in flower buds may allow these organisms to penetrate the living tissues.
