VIROLOGICAL PROGRAMME IN BREEDING OF APRICOTS FOR RESISTANCE TO PLUM POX VIRUS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Authors:   J. Polák, J. Chod, J. Pívalová, I. Oukropec, B. Krška, Z. Jansta
Abstract:
The programme in the breeding of apricots for resistance to PPV in the Czech Republic includes the verification of resistance in foreign cultivars of apricots, verification of heritability of resistance to PPV in new hybrids, study of the influence of rootstock on resistance to PPV, verification of the suitability of woody indicators of PPV in breeding for resistance, and comparison of PPV strains from the point of view of breeding for resistance.

Cultivars shown abroad as resistant to PPV have been used in the breeding of apricots since 1983. These and some other cultivars were grafted on apricot cv. Vegama infected with PPV. Preliminary results showed cultivars Harlayne, Stark Early Orange, Stella, Chuang Zho Hong, Mai Chua Sin, Leronda, and INRA 804 X 669255a as resistant to PPV. Cultivars Harcot, Goldrich, and Mari de Cenad were shown to be susceptible to PPV. Preliminary evaluation of 51 hybrids of two cultivars (SEO, Henderson) resistant to PPV showed 40 hybrids as resistant.
