A METHOD TO DETERMINE THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF APRICOT CULTIVARS TO PLUM POX VIRUS

Authors:   J.M. Audergon, G. Morvan, F. Dicenta, G. Chastelliere, I. Karayiannis
Abstract:
Since 1917, a large diffusion of plum pox virus across the European countries has been observed. Serious concern exists in the apricot orchards, due to the high susceptibility of all European cultivars. A common objective of all apricot European breeders is to release new cultivars including resistance to this virus. Two main approaches should be considered in the evaluation of plant susceptibility to the disease: a natural infection in contaminated areas and the experimental infection in insect-proof conditions.

A description of the experimental method to evaluate cultivar susceptibility is presented. Plants inoculated by an infected chip-bud were used, and the evaluation of susceptibility was performed by observation of symptoms, serological methods (ELISA), and a biological indicator (GF305). The results have been validated against those observed in naturally infected conditions in Greece.
