Abstract:
During the five years of experiment 1, it was very common to find ovaries with three ovules in all the varieties studied.
The percentage varied from 33.3% in 1992 to 78.8% in 1989. The number of ovaries containing two ovules reached two thirds of the total in 1992. The presence of four ovules reached 25% in 1988. As regards varietal differences, Pepito del Cura showed four ovules per ovary in 40% of cases in 1988, the same percentage as Gitano in 1990. 100% of Carrascal ovaries showed three ovules in 1991 and 100% of Velazquez Fino had two ovules in 1992. The presence of five or six ovules in an ovary was much less frequent.
In experiment 2, ovaries with three ovules predominated in varieties located in Santomera, the warmest location, while two ovules were most common in Bullas, the coldest locality, suggesting that temperature plays an important role in this respect.
The presence of three or more ovules in such different varieties suggests that this is a common phenomenon and not one restricted to particular varieties.
