THE ROLE OF FLORAL NECTAR PRODUCTION IN FERTILITY OF APRICOTS

Authors:   Zs. Orosz Kovács, F. Nyujtó, M.M. Kerek
Keywords:   Endogenous thythm, strategies of pollination biology, floral biology, insect attraction
Abstract:
Similarly to other stone fruits, floral nectar secretion in apricot is also periodic with different secretion rhythms in homogamic and dichogamic (protandric and protogynic) types. Nectar production maxima occur in homogamic flowers synchronously with sexual organ activity every six hours, whereas in dichogamic flowers nectar production has a periodicity of 12 hours. Apricot pollination strategy may change from year to year within the same cultivar. Based on their secretion rhythms apricot cultivars are not homogenous, most can be classified as homogamous whit the other types also present. For developing cultivar combinations for planting, we recommend consideration the endogen rhythms of the flowers, strategies of pollination biology and concentration of the nectar of various cultivars.
