BEE POLLINATION OF APRICOT: VARIETY FEATURES AFFECTING BEE ACTIVITY

Authors:   P. BENEDEK, J. NYÉKI, Z. SZABÓ
Abstract:
Flower size, no. of stamens in flowers, relative position of stamens and pistils, nectar content of flowers, sugar content in nectar, size of anthers, pollen production of flowers, bee visitation to blooming trees and behaviour of flower visiting bees were inspected on 30 apricot cultivars at 7 different sites over a period of six consecutive years in Hungary. It was established that the most important feature of the apricot flower was that, it varied considerably depending on the year and the place. In spite of this apricot has the ability to attract bees for pollination and it is fairly attractive to bees among early flowering fruit species. Its cultivars, however, do not differ significantly in features affecting bee pollination.
