Abstract:
Xylem development and boron concentration were studied in two apricot cultivars: "Portici", characterized by unsatisfactory yield when grown outside its original environment, and "S.Castrese", which in contrast presents regular and elevated productivity.
Over a two-year period samples of flower buds and mixed twigs were collected from October up to blooming time.
Observations were performed as anatomical studies in order to assess development of xylem elements and flower bud boron levels determined by spectrophotometer analysis.
Study of the development through time of vessel secondary thickening, from the base of the bud axis up to the ovary, allowed five stages to be detected.
In "S. Castrese", xylem continuity between the bud primordium and adjacent tissue was always detected earlier compared to cv. "Portici". The most significant increase in flower bud total boron concentration was found during the period of flower bud active growth resumption.
