Abstract:
There is no information about fruit cracking behavior of Turkish apricot cultivars.
Rainy days and high relative humidity which occurred during the period of fruit maturity gave an opportunity to determine the cracking characteristics of some popular apricot cultivars such as Tokaloglu, Çöloglu, Hacihaliloglu, Hasanbey, Sam and Sekerpare.
At harvest time, 300 fruit samples were picked from each tree to examine the cracking ratio, number of cracks, the depth and the length of cracking and their locations.
Also pomological studies were done on 25 fruits from each tree.
Sekerpare was found to be the most susceptible cultivar with the highest cracking ratio.
On the other hand Sam variety showed no cracking.
In terms of decreasing susceptibility the cultivars can be arranged as follows: Sekerpare (92.33%), Hacihaliloglu (77.33%), Çöloglu (49.67%), Hasanbey (23.83%), Tokaloglu (20.80%), Sam (did not crack).
In Hasanbey, Hacihaliloglu and Çöloglu cultivars, all cracking was observed on the suture line of the fruit, but in Tokaloglu (except the cavity and apex) and Sekerpare cultivars, cracking was on different parts of the fruit, such as the cheeks, dorsal side, cavity, suture line, and apex.
