ISHS Acta Horticulturae 384: X International Symposium on Apricot Culture

FLOWER BIOLOGY IN APRICOT: MAIN ASPECTS AND PROBLEMS

Authors:   R. Guerriero, S. Bartolini
Keywords:   microsporogenesis, pollen, sterility, fertilization, self-incompatibility
Abstract:
On the basis of previous research carried out by many authors, in the present review several points concerning present knowledge of the main phases of the reproductive biology of apricot are discussed.

The following subjects are treated: microsporogenesis (pollen mother cell, tetrads and mature pollen), macrosporogenesis and pistil.

The possible causes of partial or total infertility (genetic, cytologic and morphologic sterility) are investigated.

In particular some problems concerning relationships between agro-climatic conditions and scanty germination and poor pollination are illustrated.
