Abstract:
Historical, geographical and climatic factors have provided Italy with an outstanding apricot germplasm heritage.
The collecting of apricot germplasm began more than 20 years ago at the University of Pisa's Dipartimento di Coltivazione e Difesa delle Specie Legnose, at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura in Rome and at the University of Bologna's Dipartimento di Colture Arboree.
Of the roughly 670 accessions identified and collected by these institutions under the aegis of the CNR's national coordination group for the protection of genetic resources in woody fruit species, 300 are native Italian varieties or presumed clones.
All the Italian varieties or clones (old and new) and all the foreign ones have been catalogued by several main traits as per the IBPGR descriptor list, and a statistical evaluation comparing Italian germplasm to foreign varieties in the collection of Italian institutions has been completed.
