APRICOT BREEDING AND RESEARCH IN POLAND

Authors:   T. Jakubowski, H. Zdyb
Abstract:
The first active apricot breeding program was initiated at Skierniewice in 1952, with the aim of obtaining winter hardy cultivars and of broadening the genetic variability. The second stage of the breeding program with the goal of developing late blooming cultivars began in 1968 and was discontinued in 1984. As a result of this breeding work, only 'Somo' cultivar was released and introduced at the end of the 1980's.

The evaluation of apricot cultivars and of stem builders has been carried out at Lipowa Field Station situated in the south-eastern part of Poland.

The experiment with the stem builders' evaluation was carried out during the period of 1973–1983. The plum cultivars: Wagenheim Prune and Early Prune, used as stem builders, caused the significant reduction of tree size.
