Abstract:
Since 1960 an apricot breeding programme has been developed in France to improve apricot cultivation.
The main goals of this programme were the extension of the harvest season, fruit quality improvement, late blooming and tolerance to the main diseases.
Standard breeding techniques were used : self-pollination, controlled hybridization.
Breeding plans, mainly based on French apricot cultivars, also included foreign cultivars from USA, Russia and other European countries.
Since the beginning of the programme 13000 hybrids have been evaluated from the first step on their own roots to the end of the experimentation. 1000 of them have been selected and were introduced after grafting into a multilocal trial in comparison with foreign selections and actual cultivars.
Around 100 were placed in a second multilocal experiment.
Nine new cultivars have been released since 1989 : "Helena du Roussillon" A2358, "Mariem" A2360, "Fantasme" A1939, "Sortilège" A2361, "Malice" A2241, "Comédie" A2481, "Gâterie" A2265, "Ivresse" A2243, and AVIKALINE A1711.
