INVESTIGATIONS ON BREEDING OF SOME LOCAL AND FOREIGN APRICOT CULTIVARS

Authors:   A. YILDIZ, N. KASKA
Abstract:
The Mediterranean coastal region represents the most favorable, conditions for early apricot culture in Turkey. Although a great number of cultivars suitable for this region were selected, none of them provided most of the requirements for fresh marketing types.

In this work the aim was to try apricot cultivars of different origin with desirable characteristics such as fruit size, hardiness, regular and abundant productivity as genitors in hybridization with important local cultivars with desirable fruit quality such as high TSS content, attractive colour juiciness, aroma and precocity.

Precoce de Colomer, J.Foulon, Canino, Fracasso and Cafona (foreign cultivars) and Sakit-1, Sakit-2, Sakit-6, 07-K-11, Sultanhisar Alyanak (Local cultivars) are being crossed.

The first F1 seedlings of this breeding programme which was started in 1989, were planted at 1x2m distances. The primary observations of the trees and pomological analysis of the fruits have been done. The work is still continuing.
