EARLY SCREENING TECHNIQUES IN SEARCHING FOR APRICOT ADAPTATION TO CENTRAL MEXICO

Author:   S. Pérez-González
Abstract:
Identification of superior apricot genotypes during early stages of a breeding program will bring a higher level of efficiency. Associations between juvenile phases and adult trees could provide a useful tool in searching for adaptation to local climate. This work was designed to identify seed and juvenile seedling traits that could allow the identification of superior apricot genotypes. A wide range of local and introduced seed samples were studied during stratification to detect differences in the speed of seed germination. The seedlings derived from them were evaluated in the field for survival, vigor, growth habit and fruiting. Great variability was registered on most traits studied, with faster seed germination for genotypes from warmer climates. Differences in percent of seedlings fruiting during third leaf were striking and closely related with speed of seed germination, initial vigor and survival. These results will provide a screening tool to detect apricot genotypes with greater possibilities for production in the local environment.
