ISHS Acta Horticulturae 384: X International Symposium on Apricot Culture

THE APRICOT INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Author:   J. Victor
Abstract:
The apricot plantings in South Africa cover 5400 hectares of land. Just over 56000 metric tones of apricots are produced by 800 farmers. The farm sizes vary from 20 hectares to over 250 hectares under irrigation and apricot plantings are normally a smaller percentage of the plantings on the farm.

Apricots are produced for the fresh market, dried industry and canning industry. In all these cases the product can be sold locally or exported. Quality product is an essential basis for successful apricot industry.

The future of the apricot industry lies to a great extent in improved cultivars and rootstocks, better orchard management and the management of pests and diseases.
