Abstract:
Most of the apricot varieties under cultivation in the world belong to random selections.
The first cultivars coming from improvement programmes based on hybridization or mutagenesis have just been registered.
It gives the opportunity to highlight some peculiar characteristics of the apricot improvement procedures.
Among them (i) a large convergence in the objectives and in the choice of selection criteria has been observed among the different teams, (ii) the adaptation of the apricot cultivars requires a special breeding programme for each area.
Considering methodology and genetics (i) hybridization appeared more efficient than mutagenesis as far as the number of promising selection is concerned, (ii) most of the agronomical criteria under study are expected to be under polygenic control.
Moreover the improvement of the selection process or of the breeding activities highlight the lack of basical research on two main theme : optimization of the selection criteria and resistance to the main diseases such as Sharka.
