ISHS Acta Horticulturae 383: Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Plants

EFFECT OF NITROGEN SUPPLY IN HERBICIDE STRIPS OR IN GRASS ALLEYS ON APPLE GROWTH, YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY

Authors:   M. Comai, F. Corradini, D. Porro, O. Failla
Keywords:   Apple trees, Nitrogen fertilization, Orchard floor management
Abstract:
A long term (12 years) experimental trial which compared the effects of different rates (O, 30, 90 kg/ha) of nitrogen fertilization in herbicide strips or in grass alleys in a newly planted intensive apple orchard cv. Golden Delicious on M9 rootstock indicated that in those particular environmental conditions (soil rich in organic matter which assured an adequate leaf nitrogen status), the nitrogen supply and its different localization did not affect tree growth, yield and fruit quality. The soil nitrate levels were more influenced by soil management than by nitrogen fertilizations.

The importance of soil and leaf diagnostic tests to guide fertilizer practices was confirmed.
