MINERAL COMPOSITION OF "JONAGOLD" APPLES DIFFERING IN SIZE AND IN THE PRESENCE OF BITTER PIT

Author:   J. Ben
Keywords:   fruit calcium, fruit magnesium, fruit potassium, fruit storage
Abstract:
"Jonagold" apples from trees on M. 26 rootstock were placed in a cold store at 2°C and 87–90% air humidity for 180 days. After this period apples with and without bitter pit (BP), symptoms were divided into 3 size groups: small (120 g), medium (160 g) and large (200 g). Each apple in the given group was separately analyzed for number of seeds and K, Ca, Mg and P content. In the group with BP, fewer seeds were found in small apples. In the remaining groups, both of healthy apple and those with BP, no significant differences were found in the number of seeds. Differences in calcium content were noted between the size groups of apples affected with BP. Apples with BP symptoms more potassium than healthy ones. Healthy fruit from medium and large groups showed a smaller content of magnesium than apples with BP. Differences in phosphorus content between small apples occured, those with BP symptoms showing greater amounts of this nutrient.
