INFLUENCE OF ROOTSTOCK ON MINERAL CONTENT AND STORAGE OF APPLE FRUITS

Author:   J. Ben
Keywords:   apples, bitter pit symptoms, calcium, fruit firmness, fruit storage, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, rootstocks
Abstract:
The influence of rootstock on postharvest fruit quality of apple cv. "Gloster", "Jonagold", "S'ampion" and "Elstar" was evaluated over the period of three years. "Gloster" apples on M. 26 and "Jonagold" on M. 9 rootstocks had the highest firmness and soluble solids content. No influence of rootstocks on firmness was found in "S'ampion" apples on M. 26 and P. 22 rootstocks. A high accumulation of calcium characterized "Gloster" on M. 26, "Jonagold" on M. 9, "S'ampion" on M. 26 and "Elstar" on P. 22 rootstocks. Apples susceptibility to bitter pit depended on the rootstocks - variety combination in "Gloster" apples it decreased with less vigorous rootstocks: e.g. "Jonagold" and "Elstar" were more susceptible when grafted on M. 26 rootstocks than on other rootstocks.
