ISHS Acta Horticulturae 383: Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Plants

EFFECTS OF SOIL MANAGEMENT, IRRIGATION AND FERTIGATION IN AN IP APPLE ORCHARD ON SOIL NITRATE CONTENT AND ON TREE MINERAL NUTRITION

Authors:   R. Hornig, G. Bünemann
Keywords:   Fertigation, soil NO3-N, orchard floor ground cover
Abstract:
In a field experiment the soil nitrate content to 90 cm depth throughout the growing season in a newly planted 'Elstar'/M9 orchard with "fertigation" or "broadcast fertilizer application plus irrigation" was compared under five different tree strip treatments. The nitrate content was mainly affected by the tree strip treatment. Under the open tree strips fertigation allows sufficient nitrogen nutrition of the trees. However, whether fertigation is an environmentally acceptable way of fertilizer application, as often maintained, cannot clearly be answered with the data of this trial.
