ISHS Acta Horticulturae 383: Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Plants

RELATIONSHIPS AMONG PEDO-CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, PLANT AVAILABLE WATER AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF GRAPEVINES

Abstract:
The aim of this research work was to study the relationships among climate effects, plant available soil water (PAW) and leaf macronutrients status in Vitis vinifera (cv. Müller Thurgau).

In a first trial, during a three year period, in 8 representative Müller Thurgau vineyards located in similar climatic conditions, leaf samples at fruit set and veraison were collected and analyzed. N, P, K, Ca and Mg nutritional status showed fairly good interrelationships with Huglin heliothermic index and rainfall estimated through the vegetative growth season.

In a second experiment, eight omogeneous areas with respect to landscape forms and pedological characteristics (landscape units) were selected in the Trentino area (northern Italy) and described. In each landscape unit, soil samples were collected to determine plant available water by the Richard's plate method. Water availability was strongly related to vines performances in terms of N, P, K leaf nutrient concentration and pruning weight.
