ISHS Acta Horticulturae 383: Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Plants

FRUIT MINERAL ANALYSIS OF TWO "TAROCCO" CLONES OF SWEET ORANGE TO ESTIMATE FRUIT MINERAL REMOVALS

Authors:   P. Rapisarda, F. Intrigliolo, S. Intelisano
Keywords:   Citrus sinensis, blood orange, mineral nutrients
Abstract:
We studied the macro and microelement content in two "Tarocco" fruit clones in order to determine the amount of nutrients removed from orchards by production. The study was conducted over a three year period on "Tarocco" orange old and nucellar line fruit [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] coming from two farms situated in eastern Sicily. We determined mineral composition of whole fresh fruit and dry matter. In addition we studied the physical-chemical characteristics of the soil and carried out leaf analysis. Higher concentration of N was observed in fruit of nucellar line and higher Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn in old line. Potassium concentration was similar in the two clones.

Nutrient removal with harvested fruits was greatest for N and K which presented comparable values in the two clones. There was a conspicuous removal by production of Ca but this depletion was less marked for Mg and P. Production resulted in only low micronutrient removal.
