Abstract:
The effects and recolonization potential of terrestrial non-target organisms following chemical soil sterilization were studied in two field trials.
The main groups of interest were epigeic arthropods (beetles, spiders), the mesofauna of the soil (Collembola,) and earthworms.
There was a clear initial reduction in the number of individuals in all the groups studied, but a single treatment with Basamid Granular (98% Dazomet) did not cause any permanent damage to these groups.
Surviving individuals and those immigrating from the surrounding areas ensure a rapid recolonization.
