ISHS Acta Horticulturae 382: IV International Symposium on Soil and Substrate Infestation and Disinfestation

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DAZOMET* AS INFLUENCED BY THE USE OF PLASTIC SHEETING

Author:   J. Eitel
Abstract:
Covering the soil with plastic sheeting, after a soil sterilant (such as Dazomet) has been applied, serves to optimise the biological effect and at the same time to minimise the influence on air and water.

The increase in effectiveness, in particular, is due to the retention of the active material in the target area of the soil and to the additional effect of solarisation, thus achieving an integrated soil sterilization system.

The improvement can be observed in the herbicidal, fungicidal, bactericidal, nematicidal and insecticidal effects.

The positive aspect, from the environmental point of view, is that the active material applied is mineralised in the soil and the majority of the breakdown products thus produced become available for plant utilization. This prevents leaching into the subsoil. The gaseous breakdown products do not have any effect on the stratosphere.

Thus, Dazomet may be used on all horticultural and agricultural land for the effective and problem-free treatment of all types of soil fatigue.
