ISHS Acta Horticulturae 382: IV International Symposium on Soil and Substrate Infestation and Disinfestation

SOIL DISINFESTATION ACCORDING TO LEGISLATION AND IN PRACTICE

Author:   C. Van Assche
Abstract:
Guaranteed plant production and world trade make more and more demands, not only quantitatively and qualitatively, but also the legal quarantine requirements and respect of the environment.

In intensive horticulture, even with a very limited infestation of the soil and with some procentual shedding, mainly at an early stage is not profitable any more.

A very slight root necrosis, a malformation or an infection may already lead to a qualitatively unacceptable fresh or preserving product. The fast and worldwide spread of plant identities, owing to modern commercial management, also introduces new geo-phytopathological interactions, and requires strong phytosanitary control. Each soil-borne detected pathogen may lead to total embargoes, and conventional health certificates do not generally guarantee absolute absence of pathogens.
