SOLUBLE PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS FROM CUSCUTA REFLEXA AND CUSCUTA PLATYLOBA

Authors:   C. Löffler, A. Sahm, F.-C. Czygan, P. Proksch, V. Wray
Abstract:
Eight major phenolic constituents from Cuscuta reflexa and Cuscuta platyloba (Cuscutaceae) parasitising on different host plants were isolated and identified by UV-data, NMR and MS. The compounds identified included 5-caffeoyl-quinic acid (chlorogenic acid), 3,5-dicaffeoyl-quinic acid, 4,5-dicaffeoyl-quinic acid, quercetin, and its O-glycosides quercetin-3-O-ß-galactoside and quercetin-3-O-ß-glucoside as well as kaempferol-3-O-ß-galactoside and kaempferol-3-O-ß-glucoside.

C. reflexa cultivated in greenhouse yielded mainly hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, whereas field grown plants showed the ability to synthesize flavonoids as well. C. platyloba was characterized by the accumulation of flavonoids in addition to caffeic acid esters.

The pattern of phenolic compounds in both Cuscuta-species proved to be stable irrespective of the different host plants employed in the experiments.
