DEGRADATION OF PHENOLIC ACIDS BY BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM HYDROPONIC TOMATO CULTURE WITH CIRCULATING NUTRIENT SOLUTION

Authors:   B. Waechter-Kristensen, P. Sundin, P. Jensén
Keywords:   degradation, bacteria, phenolic acids, caffeic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, hydroponics, soilless culture, tomato
Abstract:
Several bacterial isolates were obtained from closed hydroponic greenhouse cultures of tomato, using media supplemented with caffeic acid. Some of the isolates were studied further. All of these were found to grow in the presence of 50 μM of p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic and caffeic acids, and within 72 h caused in average 40, 30 and 80 per cent reduction, respectively, in the concentrations of these phenolic acids.
