Abstract:
Two years old plants of Coffea arabica L. were inoculated with the rust Hemileia vastatrix Berk et Br. or infiltrated with a bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas syringae. The presence of biocidal compounds in the extracts was assessed by a bioassay method, with a dense suspension of Cladosporium cucumerinum ELL. et Arth (Allen & Kúc, 1968). The characterization of phytoalexins was made mainly by high-field NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
The total phenol content was determined in the extract obtained from the acetone powders and calculated as the quantity of chlorogenic acid present.
