Abstract:
Three micropropagated clones of paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh) were evaluated for the response to partial defoliation the by gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) larvae, under glasshouse conditions.
Two separate cohorts of 4th instars were placed on plants ca. 10 days apart to investigate the influence of previous feeding on the concentration of total phenols and the activity of two enzymes connected with phenol synthesis or oxidation.
Samples of young and old leaves were taken at special intervals.
Phenols were increased in response to insect feeding in both young and old leaves of two birch clones and only in young leaves of the third one.
Activity of PAL and PPO was increased after gypsy moth feeding in two clones of birch.
