Abstract:
Effects of natural and experimentally caused environmental stress were visible on the production of furanocoumarins.
In most cases plants, after an initial decrease in synthesis for 1-2 days, showed increased total concentrations of coumarins and, more importantly, increased extrusion to the surface.
Such extrusion enhanced the potential activity of the furanocoumarins, forming a barrier outside the plant body against impinging bacteria and fungal spores.
As furanocoumarins also absorb ultraviolet, such a shield can be compared to suntan lotion, which absorbs ultraviolet more strongly with increasing thickness.
