ISHS Acta Horticulturae 381: International Symposium on Natural Phenols in Plant Resistance

INFLUENCE OF NATURAL PHENOLS ON TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE-RHIZOBIUM TRIFOLII SYMBIOSIS

Author:   T.I. NOVIKOVA
Abstract:
Effect of eight phenolic compounds, contained in germinating seeds and roots of legume on clover-Rhizobium symbiosis, was investigated. Flavonols (quercetin and its derivatives), coumarins (esculin, esculetin), hydroxybenzoic acids (vanillic, gallic) inhibited the growth of plants and the development of symbiosis at 10-4 M, however the lower concentrations 10-9-10-6 M were shown to stimulate nodule formation and nitrogen fixing activity significantly. Addition of quercetin and rutin to MS-medium enhanced nitrogenase activity of Rhizobium trifolii-clover callus system.
