SALICYLIC ACID CONTENT IN CUCUMBER PLANTS INFECTED WITH PSEUDOMONAS LACHRYMANS AND TOBACCO NECROSIS VIRUS

Authors:   W. Mölders, P. Meuwly, K. Summermatter, J.-P. Métraux
Abstract:
Cucumber plants were inoculated either with Pseudomonas lachrymans or with tobacco necrosis virus (TNV) on the lower leaf (leaf 1). Levels of salicylic acid (SA) were analysed in leaf 1 and in the upper leaf (leaf 2) at regular intervals up to 7 days post-infection.

The level of free SA in leaf 1 24h after infection with P. lachrymans was to 940 ng/g FW, representing a 21-fold increase compared to controls. In leaf 2 free SA increased 5-fold (to 320 ng/g FW) 48 h post-inoculation.

Inoculation with TNV gave a lower and delayed increase of SA compared to infection with P. lachrymans.
