Abstract:
An isoflavonoid identified as formononetin and the pterocarpan phytoalexin medicarpin occur as their respective O-glucoside-6"-O-malonates, FGM and MGM, in healthy alfalfa plants together with lesser amounts of a conjugate of coumestrol (CG). All conjugates occur predominantly in the roots and accumulate with age.
Mature plants which have not been nodulated contain higher levels of FGM in the roots than do the roots of nodulated plants.
Under normal conditions foliage contains very low concentrations of CG, FGM and MGM. However the conjugates accumulated in the foliage of seedlings when fed with CuCl2 at low concentrations (50μM) through the petiole.
Increasing copper concentrations inhibited accumulation of the conjugates but not the aglycones.
In whole seedling experiments this effect was more pronounced with copper treatment resulting in the inhibition and differential turnover of MGM and FGM in the root.
