ISHS Acta Horticulturae 381: International Symposium on Natural Phenols in Plant Resistance

TOPICS IN THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF PLANT PHENOLS

Author:   W. Heller
Keywords:   Plant phenols, secondary metabolites, shikimate pathway, flavonoids, phenyl-propanoids, benzoic acids, plant development, elicitors, UV-B radiation, biosynthesis, tracer techniques, spectroscopic techniques, enzymology
Abstract:
An overview is given on biosynthetic pathways derived from the metabolic intermediates shikimate and quinate, which are probably the richest source of phenolic plant metabolites known so far. Information is presented on methods applied to their isolation and characterization, their in vivo (tracer techniques) as well as in vitro formation by a sequence of enzyme reactions. Special techniques needed to study phenol-rich plant tissues are also presented.
