ISHS Acta Horticulturae 380: Symposium on Tropical Root Crops in a Developping Economy

PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON THE EFFECTS OF PLANTING PATTERN AND PLANT SPACING ON YIELD COCOYAM (XANTHOSOMA SAGITTIFOLIUM)

Authors:   G.K. Hotsonyame, E.K.S. Ahiekpor
Abstract:
Three planting densities (2.78, 1.78, and 1.23 plants m-2) and 3 planting patterns (square, rectangular, and triangular) were studied to determine the influence of plant population and spatial arrangement on the cormel yield of cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium). Plant population significantly affected yield but planting pattern did not. Population of 2.78 and 1.78 plant m-2 gave total marketable cormel yields that were 50.6% and 19.3%, respectively, higher than at a population of 1.23 plants m-2. Reducing the spacing between cocoyam plants significantly decreased both weight and number of marketable cormels per plant but not cormel size per plant.
