Abstract:
The paper reviews the production trends for tropical root and tuber crops over the preceeding several years and asserts that production and utilization have not increased rapidly enough.
Identified production constraints include high labor requirement, low genetic potential for yield, diseases and pests, and inadequate research attention.
Prominent among the utilization constraints are poor storability of the crops, lack of appropriate processed forms, and problems of acceptability by the consuming populace.
Suggestions and recommendations are given for overcoming the identified constraints.
