Abstract:
The study focuses on cassava production practices at the farmers level.
It assessed farmer characteristics, cultivation practices and the extent of problems encountered by cassava cultivation in Ghana.
The specific objectives of the study were to: (i) describe cassava production practices in the various agro-ecological zones of Ghana; (ii) identify and prioritize the major production problems; and (iii) develop an agenda for on-farm technology testing which satisfy farmers' requirements and is compatible with their resource endowments.
To fulfil these objectives, pretested questionnaires were administered to randomly sampled farmers in the 3 major cassava producing agroecological zones in Ghana.
The results of the study showed that differences in cultivation practices exist among cassava cultivators in the country.
It is therefore inappropriate to categorize cassava cultivators into one homogenous group.
Each zone has its own special characteristics.
On the other hand, cassava cultivators across the country have some common characteristics for selecting cassava varieties.
Farmers did not indicate any major agronomic problem; rather constraints to production were mostly related to finance.
