Abstract:
Developing usable packages of technologies for African farmers comprises multi-dimensional set of activities that interweave research and extension institutions as well as the policies of government, nongovernmental organizations, social, and developmental agencies.
In the recent experience of Africa, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria has, in the last 20 yrs, formulated and established a system of strong collaboration and partnership with many national root crop programs to develop locally acceptable varieties.
Such cooperative links have also led to the development of national capabilities to disseminate packages of technical information and technologies on root crops that are contributing to household food security in Africa.
