ISHS Acta Horticulturae 38: Symposium on Vegetable Storage

STUDIES ON PRECOOLING AND STORAGE OF SOME VARIETIES OF SNAP BEANS

Authors:   F. Gorini, G. Borinelli, T. Maggiore
Abstract:
Seventeen cultivars of snap beans, of which brief notes are given relative to the special productive agronomic properties, were precooled in forced air and hydrocooled, bringing the temperature to 4°C and 7°C, after which they were stored for 3, 5 and 7 days at the same temperature. Loss of weight, damage due to cold, withering and flexibility were determined at the end of storage.

With regard to the weight loss the snap beans examined can be divided into 4 classes (reduced, medium, high, very high), tabling the cultivars as follows:
reduced: Jolanda, Astro, Topcrop
medium: Corene, Rodeo, Saxa
high: Arian, Blue Lake 274 and 290, Early Harvest, Orbit, Pico, Processor, Wade
very high: Costant, Tendercrop, Contender.

As for the chilling injuries, while some cultivars show nothing (Astro, Orbit, Tendercrop), the injuries are reduced in percentage for Arian, Blue Lake 274, Early Harvest, Processor, while in other ones they remain high (Blue Lake 290, Corene, Constant, Jolanda, Pico, Rodeo, Wade) or very high (Contender, Topcrop).
