Abstract:
It was examined how the storage ability of pickling cucumbers was influenced by mechanical harvesting with the American Hart-Carter machine and the Hungarian BMG-harvester on one hand and by hand-harvesting on the other.
The results were as follows:
- Pickling cucumbers harvested mechanically showed a respiration distinctly higher than that of cucumbers harvested by hand;
- Mechanical harvesting of cucumbers caused higher mass losses than harvesting by hand.
But there were no differences in rotting.
Thus the conclusions are: From the point of view of post harvest physiology cucumbers harvested mechanically should quickly be processed.
