ISHS Acta Horticulturae 379: International Symposium on Quality of Fruit and Vegetables: Influence of Pre- and Post- Harvest Factors and Technology

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FRUIT MINERAL CONTENT, HEXANE EXTRACTS OF THE PEEL AND SUPERFICIAL SCALD IN APPLES (CV. JONAGOLD)

Author:   R. Marcelle
Abstract:
In an experiment consisting of 20 apple orchards (cv. Jonagold) and 3 picking dates, the storage behaviour of fruit was examined during several months in order to evaluate the susceptibility first to superficial scald and second to other physiological disorders. Hexane extracts of the fruit peel measured at 3 wavelengths (200, 232 and 269 nm) were tested as tools for predicting scald susceptibility. As other researchers before, we found significant correlations between hexane extracts and scald incidence but these correlations were much better when using hexane values obtained after 3 months of storage in place of values measured at harvest. Equations obtained after multiple linear regressions (forward) were also much better when the independent variables were measured after some months of storage. However, the practical interest of such equations for predicting storage susceptibility is limited.
