ISHS Acta Horticulturae 379: International Symposium on Quality of Fruit and Vegetables: Influence of Pre- and Post- Harvest Factors and Technology

EFFECT OF SUBSTRATE AND CULTIVAR ON EARLINESS, PLANT PRODUCTIVITY, AND FRUIT QUALITY OF STRAWBERRY

Authors:   K. ANAGNOSTOU, M.D. VASILAKAKIS
Abstract:
The effect of 4 substrates by using the vertical system of strawberry cultivation was studied during the period 1991–92. Fruit ripening started in December. During the total harvest period two peaks were noticed: one in early March and a second one in early June. Perlite, compared to other substrates, resulted in significantly higher total yield of “Fern” (321,43 g/plant). In "Selva" the highest yield was noticed in the 60+40% substrate (268,26 g/ plant). Fruit quality was not affected by the substrate. Major differences noticed in flesh firmness, soluble solids, acidity and anthocyanins were due to cultivar, light intensity or fruit load of the plant.
