Abstract:
The experiments were carried out during 1990–1991 to investigate whether the raise of pH in the last years of the 1980's in Greece was due to the prevalence of once over harvest, which displaced the conventional for Greek conditions two passage harvest and to find out the most susceptible varieties to this harvesting procedure change.
The varieties used were Rio Grande, Campbell-38, Titano and Bull.
A highly significant variation was observed for varieties and harvest passages regarding pH and titratable acidity (TA) in both years.
A significant interaction was also found for varieties x harvest passages.
In 1990 the orthogonal contrast of once over harvest against two passage harvest was significant regarding TA and not significant regarding pH. In 1991, this orthogonal contrast was significant regarding both pH and TA.
Once over harvest caused increase of pH value and decrease of TA but not to the same extent in all varieties and in each year.
The variety most influenced by the once over harvest was Rio Grande and the variety least influenced was Campbell-38.
