INFLUENCE OF PELARGONIUM FLOWER BREAK VIRUS (PFBV) AND NEPOVIRUSES ON PELARGONIUM PRODUCTION |

| Abstract:
Viruses are usually not considered to be the main problem in Pelargonium production. Nevertheless, it is well known that the infection with some viruses, mainly nepoviruses, of Pelargonium mother plants can have pronounced adverse effect on the vegetative multiplication of this crop. Pelargonium flower break virus, however, is widespread in stocks of European Pelargoniums nowadays, but information on its effect on mother plants is sparse. Studies were therefore done to elucidate the effect of PFBV infections on the growth and productivity of Pelargonium mother plants. Comparing the effect of PFBV and nepoviruses in the production of Pelargonium plants it is evident that the infection with the former virus (PFBV) is of minor importance. Only in pink cultivars it would seem advantageous to start with PFBV-free material. | |
