ISHS Acta Horticulturae 377: VIII International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

VIRUS AND VIRUS-LIKE DISEASES OF PELARGONIUM IN ISRAEL

Authors:   A. Franck, G. Loebenstein
Abstract:
Various virus-like symptoms as ringspots, mottle mosaic, leaf deformations, vein-netting and flower break, were observed in surveys of pelargonium nurseries in Israel.

Pelargonium flower break virus (PFBV), associated with flower break and chlorotic spots on the leaves, and pelargonium line pattern virus (PLPV), found not to be associated with specific symptoms on pelargonium, were purified. The purified preparations were used for antisera-production, which were used in ELISA at dilutions of 1:1000. Molecular weights of the coat proteins of PFBV and PLPV were 33 kD and 34.5 kD, respectively. Double-stranded RNA from PLPV and PFBV infected Chenopodium quinoa plants and subjected to electrophoresis in agarose consisted of two bands with estimated Mr of 3.6 and 2 kbp for PLPV and 3 bands of Mr of 3.6, 2 and 1.7 kbp for PFBV.

Nuclear stock candidate plants, originating from meristem cultures, were selected and subjected to 3 testings during the first growing season.
